Cape Town Treasure Hunt – Terms & Conditions
Please read and accept the following Terms & Conditions before participating in the Cape Town Treasure Hunt.
OVERVIEW
In 2025, a cash token (the “Treasure”) was intentionally placed by the organizers in a secret location somewhere within the Cape Town Metropolitan Area, including the Cape Peninsula.
By choosing to participate in this treasure hunt, you agree to abide by all rules and conditions outlined in this document as well as the Addendum titled “How the Winner Will Be Confirmed”, which forms an integral part of these Terms & Conditions.
ELIGIBILITY AND PARTICIPATION
- Participants must be 18 years or older to participate on their own.
- Participation by minors is only allowed under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian and may not be conducted independently.
- By taking part, participants agree to indemnify and hold the organizers harmless from any claims, injuries, damages, losses, or legal actions arising from or in connection with the treasure hunt.
RISKS AND LIABILITY
Participants take part entirely at their own risk. The organizers are not responsible for any personal injury, property damage, or loss that may occur. Natural hazards (e.g., steep cliffs, wildlife, weather) and urban dangers (e.g., traffic, unsafe structures) are possible.
Participants are solely responsible for their own safety, fitness, preparation, and conduct during the hunt.
PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES
The treasure is not buried. Therefore, the following actions are strictly prohibited:
- Use of any digging tools or heavy equipment.
- Use of metal detectors in prohibited areas.
- Flying drones in restricted zones.
- Organizing or participating in commercial search services (e.g., guided tours, paid expeditions).
- Searching under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Reckless or illegal behaviour (e.g., searching at night, in dangerous weather, or on unsafe terrain).
- Commercial exploitation of the hunt without written permission (e.g., selling clues, producing monetized content or media).
SEARCH CONDUCT AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Participants must respect nature, property, and people. Do not litter, damage ecosystems, or disturb wildlife.
Do not trespass on private property or break any laws while searching. Leave all areas as you found them — or better.
EMERGENCY SERVICES AND COSTS
Participants are solely responsible for all costs related to emergency or medical services, including search and rescue, ambulance transport, hospital fees, or evacuations.
MULTIPLE PARTICIPANTS
More than one person or team may search for the treasure at the same time.
The prize will be awarded to the first individual or team who correctly identifies the exact location of the token and submits a qualifying solution in accordance with the process outlined in the Addendum: How the Winner Will Be Confirmed.
The organizers will not be involved in disputes between competing participants. All such matters are to be resolved independently by the parties involved.
INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPANTS
The Cape Town Treasure Hunt is open to participants worldwide. You do not have to be a South African resident to enter or win. However, all participants are solely responsible for compliance with any local laws or regulations applicable in their country of residence — including travel, currency, tax, or contest entry laws.
JURISDICTION AND LEGAL COMPLIANCE
These Terms & Conditions are governed by the laws of the Cape Town Metropolitan Area, South Africa.
All legal matters must be addressed in local courts. This treasure hunt is void where prohibited by law.
ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS
By participating in the Cape Town Treasure Hunt, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms & Conditions and the Addendum below.
Addendum: How the Winner Will Be Confirmed
To ensure fairness, a Treasure Hunt Panel of five judges will be appointed before the treasure hunt begins. This panel will oversee the confirmation of the winner and resolve any disputes related to the winning entry.
Before the hunt begins, the panel will receive a sealed document containing:
- The exact location of the treasure token.
- A detailed explanation of how the location can be determined through the clues provided.
This document will remain sealed and will only be opened on the final day of the hunt or upon receipt of a potential winning solution.
Submitting a Solution
Participants who believe they have found the correct location of the treasure must submit a formal solution to the Treasure Hunt Panel. The submission must include:
- A clear description of the exact location.
- An explanation of how the solution was reached.
- The date and time of submission.
All submissions will be officially date and time stamped and reviewed in the order received.
Appointing the Winner
There will be only one winner.
The first submission (date and time stamped) that is determined to be 100{637e9b328ee3d9011ca0c355e324173e9d7aa89196a01926f06787263850479c} correct by the Treasure Hunt Panel – both in terms of the location and the logic used to solve it – will be declared the official winner of the Cape Town Treasure Hunt.
If multiple submissions are received that are close or similar, only the first correct and complete entry will be accepted.
The decision of the Treasure Hunt Panel is final and binding.
